New to the City, New to the Room. Nobody Can Tell.

You are not really asking what a club in Queens is like. You are asking whether being new to the city will show.

It won't. Visitors and regulars come through the same door at Starlets, and once you are inside with a drink in your hand, nobody is auditing where you flew in from. The room sits in Woodside, Queens, and it is open daily 11 PM to 4 AM.

Being the visitor is the easy version

A local carries things into a night out. A group chat with seven opinions in it. A friend who always wants one more stop. You have none of that.

So pick one place and stay there. Crossing the city three times is how a visitor loses the night to travel and ends up somewhere nobody actually chose. The travel side of that is covered in getting from the airport into Queens, and the point here is only to make the trip once.

The late start is working in your favor

The doors open at 11 PM. If you are still on West Coast time, or you landed at four and slept badly in a hotel that faces a runway, that is the friendliest start time in the city. Nobody is asking you to be sharp at eight o'clock.

The club runs every night, so the visit fits whichever night you happen to be free. There is also a full kitchen, which means dinner is not a problem you have to solve somewhere else first.

Decide two things before you leave the hotel

Whether you want a table, and how you are getting back. Nothing else has to be settled from a hotel room.

A reservation is reserved seating with table service, arranged before you arrive, and it is worth more when you do not know a room yet. If that sounds right, start it on the VIP booking page, and the service list shows what else can be set up in advance. If it doesn't sound right, come as you are and use the bar.

The ride back is the part visitors forget. Starlets runs until 4 AM. Settle that at nine o'clock, not at half past three with your phone at four percent.

Two small things that save a visitor's night

Save the address in your phone before you go out, written the way a driver needs to hear it: 49-09 25th Ave, Woodside, NY 11377. A hotel lobby with signal is a better place to do that than a curb without any.

Charge the phone while you get ready. The ride, the map and the group thread all live on the same battery, and 4 AM is a long way from midnight.

What actually makes you look settled

Arrive with the destination already picked. The entrance is not a place to stand and think it over. Head for the bar, or for your table if you booked one, and let your eyes adjust once you are sitting down. The longer version is your first ten minutes inside.

Then order something. Holding a drink answers the question of what to do with your hands, and it buys you a few quiet minutes to watch the room instead of performing for it.

Saying you are visiting costs you nothing

"First time here, I'm in from out of town." That is an ordinary sentence in a club this close to LaGuardia. Staff hear it constantly, and none of them file it away as a confession.

It also gets you better answers. Someone who knows you are new will tell you where things are, instead of assuming you already know and letting you find out slowly.

If the trip has an occasion attached

Some visits are not only a night out. A birthday lands in the middle of the week you are here, or the reason five people flew in at all was a bachelor party. Those are arranged ahead of time rather than sorted out at the door, and the service list is where that starts.

Say what the night is when you book it. A quiet date night and a birthday group want different setups, and the room can only prepare the one it has been told about.
