The ID Check Starts at Home: Ten Seconds That Save Your Night
The rule fits on one line: valid government-issued photo ID, every person, every time, 21 and up. Almost nobody argues with it. People still get turned away over it, because the wallet check that would have caught the problem never happened.
That check takes ten seconds and it belongs at home, not on 25th Ave.
The ten-second check
Put your hands on the ID. Not the wallet the ID lives in. The card itself, out, in the light.
Look at three things. Is it the government-issued one, or the gym card you have been handing over at delis? Is the date still good? Is the photo still recognizably you? Then it goes back in the pocket you will still be wearing at midnight, not the jacket you might change out of.

The group version of the check
Groups fail this differently than individuals do. One person assumes the plan covers them, because there is a table booked and a group chat full of confirmations. None of that is a document.
So the organizer says it once, the day before, in plain words. Bring a valid government photo ID. Everyone. Then ask for a thumbs up from each name, which feels excessive right up until the night it saves.
Do not accept "yeah I'm good" from the friend who is famously not good. Ask him to send a photo of himself holding it. He will complain. He will also arrive with it.
Where people actually go wrong
Not with fake anything. With ordinary life.
The card expired in March and nobody looks at that date from one year to the next. The wallet got moved to a different coat. Somebody drove, so their license is fine, and the three passengers assumed the same energy applied to them. A bag got left in a hotel room because the plan said dinner, not a club, and then the plan changed at ten.
That last one is the most common shape of it. The night that turns into a club night was not packed like a club night.
The documents nobody thinks about until the door
A few situations come up often enough to be worth planning for.
The card that was replaced after a lost wallet, and the temporary paper thing handed over in the meantime. The ID that went through the wash in June and has been faintly unreadable ever since. The one belonging to somebody who turned 21 last month and has genuinely never used it.
None of those are exotic. None of them are worth guessing about either.
If you have people coming in from out of town
Their ID is the one most likely to be in the wrong place. It goes into a hotel safe, or stays in a checked bag, or sits in the jacket that seemed too heavy for the evening.
Tell them before they pack rather than after they land. Somebody who flew in for a weekend is not thinking about a Queens door while they are choosing shoes, and they will thank you for the reminder later.
When you are genuinely unsure, ask the venue

What the check buys you
A door you walk through without thinking about it. That sounds small, and it is the difference between a night that starts well and one that starts with a negotiation.
