Describe the night, not just the headcount

How many people is the easy half of the question. What the room is being asked to do for you is the other half, and it is the half that gets left out.

So say it. A reservation for two and a birthday with a cake in it are set up differently, and the answer that comes back is about your night rather than a generic one.

Ask about the minimum while you are still booking

Name the hour you are walking in

Doors are at 11 PM and the room holds until 4 AM. Your arrival decides how much of that window you actually get, which makes it a real decision rather than a detail to sort out on the way.

Give people a time you are walking in, not a time you are setting off. Everyone plans against whichever number they were handed, and only one of the two puts anybody inside the building when you meant.

Woodside is already where the trains go

The 7 train stops here and so does the Long Island Rail Road, which means a group scattered across Long Island City, Jackson Heights or Astoria converges on one place instead of meeting somewhere first and then travelling again together.

Who should be first through the door

Whoever the table is under. Everything else about an arrival can be improvised, and that one cannot, because a table nobody has claimed is a table your group stands next to.

If people are coming off different trains, name one meeting point instead of three. The person who has to send "where are you" twice is the person who ends up waiting outside on their own.
