Most People Tip at the End. The One That Matters Is the First.
Most people tip once, at the end. One gesture at closing, aimed at four hours that have already finished happening.
Move it forward. The tip that actually changes your night is the first one, because it lands while you are still a stranger at a busy bar and there are hours left for the night to be good. Starlets, the gentlemen's club in Woodside, Queens, is open daily 11 PM to 4 AM. That is a long stretch to be remembered across.
Start on the first round
Whatever you plan to do across the night, do some of it on the first drink. Not to purchase anything. It tells a busy bartender that you are paying attention, and that is rarer at one in the morning than you would think.
The first round is also the only moment when you are unknown. Every round after that arrives with context attached. Handle the first one properly and the rest of the night gets easier without you managing it.
Then keep a rhythm
The habit that matters is regularity, not size. Tip as you order, every time, instead of saving one decision for the point in the night when you are tired and everything is harder.
A rhythm does three things at once. You do not forget. You do not over-correct at the end out of guilt. And nobody working your night has to guess where they stand with you.

Decide the method before you need it
Card or cash, sort it out early. Running one tab and closing it once is simpler than paying round by round, and it keeps your last stretch of the night from turning into admin.
If you are not sure how gratuity is handled on your particular bill, ask your server when you sit down, or call (646) 301-6606 before you come out. The venue is the authority on its own tabs, and nobody else is.
The bar is not the only person working your night
Look wider than whoever hands you a drink. Someone seated you. Someone is keeping your table clear, running your card, and noticing when a glass has been empty for ten minutes.
Starlets calls its bartender-entertainers Startenders, and there is a whole weekly night built around them, which is Startender Sundays. If you have a table, the person looking after it is carrying most of your evening. How a table bill gets built, minimum included, is covered in booking bottle service at Starlets.
When you are the one holding the card
Somebody always ends up buying for the group. If that is you, tip as you go on everyone's behalf and say so once, early, so nobody assumes it is unhandled.
Then settle with your friends later, away from the bar. Eight people each deciding separately at 3 AM produces either nothing or a mess, and the person on the other side of the bar gets whichever it is.
What a tip does not buy
Worth being plain here. A tip is thanks for work being done well. It is not a lever, it is not a claim on anybody's attention, and it does not change an answer somebody already gave you.
It does not move the door either. Everyone shows a valid government-issued photo ID, every time, and nothing anyone hands anyone changes that.
Tip the people you would otherwise not notice
Good service is invisible on purpose, which is exactly why it goes unthanked. The table that stays clean, the drink that arrives before you flag anyone down, the person who moved two chairs so your group could sit together.
Notice one of those out loud tonight. Say what it was. A specific thank-you lands harder than a general one, and it costs you a sentence.
Do not save it for the walk out
By the end of the night, the person who took care of you at midnight may already be finished, and the room is busy closing itself down. A thank-you delivered to whoever happens to still be standing there is not the same thing.
Closing out has its own etiquette, and that is closing time at a gentlemen's club. Settle the tab while you are still enjoying yourself rather than while you are leaving.
Tip the person while they can still see that you meant it.
If you are only in for an hour
A short visit does not get a discount on manners. You still ordered, somebody still made it, and your night ending early is your circumstance rather than theirs.
Handle it on the way in instead of the way out. Then leaving early is just leaving early, and nobody has to read anything into it.
